Eleven years of Ritual

Deb, with Rose and Sophie

In 2015 we were two sisters with a lease, a stack of borrowed mats and no real plan beyond wanting a space where people felt looked after. We spent weeks debating what to call it. Then our mum, Deb, said “Ritual” — almost in passing, the way she says most things — and that was the end of the debate.

So this is a birthday issue. The offers, the trainings, the practices and the Open Day. Read the parts that are yours, skip the rest, then come to class.

The history of Ritual

Mid fit-out, the room stripped back to the studs
2015
Ritual opens

Ritual opens in Palm Beach, in a former solicitors’ office made up of sixteen tiny rooms that we knocked back into two studios. Our mum, Deb, suggests the name Ritual.

We open with mats we don’t own yet, a timetable of around sixty classes a week, and the two of us — Rose and Sophie — teaching every single one. Rose teaches mainly Yoga, Sophie mainly Pilates.

It is small, slightly chaotic, and ours.

People start to arrive

And thankfully, teachers start arriving too. Ines, Brooke, Susie, Katie, Suzie C, Sarah, Judes — followed by many, many more over the years.

For the first time, Ritual starts becoming something beyond the two of us.

The flood, Little Ritual & Ritual School

Palm Beach floods. What follows is around six months of renovations and a period of teaching wherever we can. The Collective across the road and other local businesses open their doors to us, lending us their spaces so that our classes can continue.

Eventually we find a little temporary home nearby. We call it Little Ritual.

And amongst all of that, something else begins. Ritual School opens and we run our first Yoga Teacher Training. Years later, after hundreds of graduates, many of the teachers on the Ritual timetable are people who first came through our doors as students.

2020–21
We keep going

Then comes COVID. Like so many small businesses, we adapt, change, close, reopen and figure things out as we go.

Eventually the doors stay open, the timetable fills again, new teachers join us and the community returns. We keep going.

2023
One studio becomes three

In one enormous month, we open Robina and Mermaid Beach, taking Ritual from one studio to three.

Teachers, staff and friends all pitch in. There are boxes, equipment, timetables, problems to solve and a lot of very long days. Somehow, we get both studios open.

2025
A difficult chapter

After two years, we make the difficult decision to close Mermaid Beach. It is one of the harder chapters in Ritual’s story, and not the ending we had imagined for that studio.

But Ritual has taught us something about beginning again. So, again, we keep going.

2026
Eleven years of Ritual

Today, Ritual is Palm Beach and Robina. More than 150 classes every week. Ritual School. Hundreds of teacher-training graduates. And a team of teachers and staff who have made Ritual something we could never have created by ourselves.

It is strange to look back at that old solicitors’ office now. Two sisters. Sixteen little rooms. Mats we didn’t own. Sixty classes a week that we taught ourselves.

And then, slowly, people arrived.

They practised here. Worked here. Taught here. Trained here. Made friends here. Helped us move studios. Helped us through floods and closures and renovations. Some left and came back. Some started as students and became teachers.

Eleven years of people turning up. And really, that is what Ritual has always been.

Thank you for being part of it.

The four birthday offers

Four of them, because no two practices look the same. Some of us come for the strength, some for the quiet, and some for the one hour in the week that belongs to nobody else. Whatever brings you to the studio, our four birthday offers are here to support you and your practice — and all four are built around the same number. All four close at 11.59pm on Wednesday 30 September.

Ritual School — the last intakes of the year

The final two trainings of 2026, and the rest of the calendar returns in 2027. Enrol this month and you start next year with a new skill and a different way of seeing your own practice — rather than waiting until 2027 to begin. Eleven years ago we were the ones being taught; now our timetable hosts a number of classes led by people who trained in these rooms. Tap a training to open it.

Two hundred hours of Hatha and Vinyasa — the internationally recognised foundation for teaching, and just as often taken by people with no intention of teaching at all. Anatomy and biomechanics, philosophy, pranayama, sequencing, and the practice of holding a room, taught by Rose across six months.

Our foundational Yoga certification, run as a hybrid: three in-person long weekends on the Gold Coast, supported by six months of online study you complete around your life.

Enrol any time to start using your 50 class credits and open your online content immediately — the study begins the moment you say yes, not the moment the doors open.

Gift someone a Ritual

Most people don’t find us through an advertisement; they walk through the doors because someone they trusted encouraged them to try a class. Birthdays, Christmas, thank-yous, sorry-you’ve-had-a-year — this is the one present people actually use.

Two ways to give it

A gift card, any amount. It works on everything we do — classes, the Bliss Pass, an Eleven Pack, the store, even a teacher-training deposit. They choose. Delivered by email the moment you buy it, so it also solves the present you forgot.

Or gift the pass itself. Buy them the Birthday Bliss Pass at $1,111 and they have six months of everything, at both studios, with nothing to set up and nothing to cancel. An Eleven Pack at $111 does the smaller version of the same thing — eleven classes, eleven weeks.

Eleven ways to spend an hour with us

Sometimes you find one class and stay in it for years, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But bodies change, weeks change, and the practice you need in March isn’t always the one you needed in September. So here is the whole menu. Try the room you have been walking past — an Eleven Pack is a good excuse, and nobody in there is looking at you.

Eleven years of you

It turned out to be the right word. A ritual isn’t a burst of motivation or a six-week challenge — it is a practice of returning, and it survives busy months, bad backs, new babies and the years when you barely make it in. What we did not expect was how much of it would be built by other people: the member who brought her sister, the teacher who came in on a Discovery Pass and now leads her own Sunday class, the hundreds of graduates teaching in studios we’ve never set foot in.

A studio isn’t a lease and some equipment. What makes it a studio is who walks in — eleven rings, one for every year, and every one of them drawn by you.

Eleven years, eleven pictures.

Eleven things you might not know

A Barre class at the barre with Pilates balls
I

You do not need to be flexible. Flexibility is an outcome, not an entry requirement — and the people who arrive least flexible tend to notice the biggest change.

II

On Sunday 27 September every class we run is free, at both studios. No membership, no catch — just book a spot like any other class.

III

Members get 25% off every workshop and event we run, plus one free members’ workshop a month.

IV

You can pause a membership. Holidays, injuries, busy quarters — it is built to bend rather than break.

V

A good part of our timetable is taught by people who trained here — your teacher may have once been a student in the room next door.

VI

Yin isn’t just stretching. Long, passive holds load connective tissue rather than muscle — which is why three minutes feels considerably longer than three minutes.

VII

Our community classes are taught by our newest graduates at a lower price. You get a class; they get the hours. Everybody wins.

VIII

A deposit holds a teacher-training place and opens your classes the same day — $389 this month instead of $500, with another $111 off the balance later.

IX

Train with Ritual School once and you keep 15% off every future training, for life. Graduates can return again and again, always able to enjoy this alumni discount.

X

Gift cards work on everything — classes, memberships, packs, the store, even a training deposit. They are the least awkward present we sell.

XI

There are two studios and your membership covers both. They run different timetables, so if your usual class doesn’t suit this week, the other one might.
